About

Background

As part of the 5th International Conference on Social Psychology and Humanity Studies, this symposium offers valuable insights into the psychological processes that shape individual experiences and social life. Human relationships and social interactions are fundamental to psychological functioning, influencing how individuals perceive others, develop emotional connections, and navigate social environments. Research in social and personality psychology examines the cognitive, emotional, and behavioural processes underlying interpersonal relationships, including trust, empathy, communication, and relationship development. Individual differences, early experiences, and social contexts shape how people interpret others’ behaviour and establish meaningful connections. Understanding these processes can advance psychological theory and inform research on relationship satisfaction, conflict, loneliness, and interpersonal difficulties.

Goal/Rationale

The goal of the symposium is to expand knowledge in the broad area of social interaction and human relationships. It aims to provide opportunities for participants to explore diverse research topics and exchange ideas. We do not anticipate a single theme; the structure is designed to maximize interest in the research process, mingle with like-minded people, gain fascinating insights into the dynamic of human relationships in both the poster and the verbal presentations, and encourage attendees to become actively involved in research.

Scope

If only students from the University of Alabama participate, there is a wealth of topics that fit under the broad rubric of Human Relations and Social Interaction. Among projects that have been published, are under review, or are in preparation by undergraduate students, a few topics include:

  • Childhood Experience and Adult Functioning: Contrasting Praise & Encouragement with Criticism and Playing Outdoor with Video-Game Involvement
  • Outside Friendship Interactions: Its Impact on Relational Satisfaction for Dating and Married Couples
  • Interpretive Filters and Personal Constructs: Are They Uniquely Individual, or Do They Share Common Features?
  • Operationalizing Wisdom: Family-Pattern Predictors, Outcomes, and the Addition of Integrity to the SD-WISE Scale
  • Boundaries Within: Predictors and Outcomes of Intrapersonal Boundaries
  • Positive and Negative Emotional Reactivity: The Asymmetric Impact of Personal Orientation toward Positive and Negative Events
  • Understanding Loneliness in University Undergraduates: Personal Characteristics, Childhood Experiences, and Contemporary Influences
