Darren George, Ph.D.
Professor of Psychology in The
University of Alabama
Personal Bio
Darren George was born in Oakland, California and remained in California through completion of his Ph.D. at UCLA. His education included St. Helena High School, Pacific Union Collage (undergraduate), Cal State Fullerton (MSc in Experimental Psychology), nine years of teaching high school mathematics in the Alhambra City School District, and completion of the Ph.D. at UCLA in 1992. His Ph.D. major was Personality and Social Psychology with a minor in Measurement & Psychometrics. Bernie Weiner and Seymour Feshbach were his mentors, and he was greatly influenced by hall-of-fame psychologists such as Harold Kelley, Shelley Taylor, and SEM guru Peter Bentler. Following this was a 29-year career at Burman University (Central Alberta, Canada) where he was a full professor and department chair. In 2021 Darren’s in-laws were suffering from dementia and COVID prevented contact. So, he and Elizabeth pulled the plug and moved to Alabama. Darren began teaching at the University of Alabama (Roll Tide!) and is now in his 6th year. Possibly Darren’s greatest academic accomplishment is authorship of IBM SPSS Statistics29, Step by Step, now going into its 19th edition, an academic best seller in most of those years, and distributed around the world. Darren’s research agenda has also been vigorous, with a focus on close relationships, and his work has been cited over 19,000 times. In other areas, Darren is married to Elizabeth, has three children (all making more money than him), is an avid runner (2:20:10 marathon) and an accomplished musician (trombone and piano).
